Richard Bay giving "The Speech"
From "The Practice" starring, in this scene, Jason Kravits and Lara Flynn Boyle as Richard Bay and Helen Gamble. "The Practice" had several episodes with some great speeches and this is one of them.
I don't have tv, so I hadn't seen this. ROFL - at the way everyone freezes to listen to "The Speech," then no one acknowledges him, or what he has said, but returns to his or her own business as soon as it is finished. Actually, that's kind of sad, really - it suggests that ordinary Americans don't recognize or appreciate that freedom must be safeguarded even when it is inconvenient and unpleasant to do so.
You said it so well! You'd expect them to applaud him for the speech, but it's just a momentary blip to them.
Also, speeches have become a lost art; everyone constantly says "kind of," "um," "uh," and the ever popular "you know."
That's one thing I like about "The Practice" - lots of great speeches and not all of them in the courtroom.
One other thing I like about "The Practice" relates to what you mention - seeing things from the POV of the prosecutors, which is at odds from the POV of everyone else, but as you are saying, that is the unappreciated glue that holds our safety together.
"Freedom must be safeguarded even when it is inconvenient and unpleasant to do so." You said a lot there. Thanks, Laura!
I love this speech. I often thought of it in law school, and now as an attorney - though I am not a prosecutor. I think that DAs are underappreciated. They should be paid more money to more adequately compensate them for their tireless work they do, and to attract more top flight talent.
Thank you, you are so right, and this show probably helped people to realize this so much more. I really like the struggles that this show always depicted for attorneys on both sides.
