Oliver's Story

Almost 2 1/2 years ago, I shared the story of my dog Harvey. I found him in Houston on Long Point street. He was sitting in the middle of the street; later we realized he had been hit by a car. To make a long story short, he's been doing great, and he's the best dog you could ever have.

Well, in April, I was on my way to get some lunch one day. I took a back street that I don't usually take (Judiway street, a few blocks from Ella, nothing to write home about).

I saw this little dog trudging across the street. He could hardly make it across. He was completely covered with mange. He looked SO horrible that I just had to stop.

Here are some pictures of this dog from the day I found him. He was actually living in a large SEWER pipe.

Because he was obviously suffering from starvation and mange, I had to get him out of there. This always seems to happen to me. It always happens a short time after one of my pets has died. I usually have 2 dogs (and a cat). I always vow that I'm not getting any more pets. After all, after my daughters are out of high school, I'd like to spend a month in Paris, etc., and not have to worry about mutts!

But it never fails that when one dog dies, a few months later, I happen upon some dreadful dog situation. In the last 2 cases, I kept hinting at the pet hospital staff to please feel free to fall in love with the dog and take it home after it was all well.

  1. Mimi this happens to me with cats. Cats seem to cross my path or move in. I just haven't got the heart to turn them away when I know what great friends they are. I even have a wild cat that only pitches up in winter. He sleeps in the cellar and I give him food. He is gone in the summer. It is the reason I want to buy the house from my landlord because will he find shelter in winter?

I think you are a fabulous person for caring.

  2. Oh, that is great that you want to buy the house to protect your winter cat boarder! That's sweet! Amazing how he remembers where to turn up and only in the winter!

Today Oliver had a tough time with the family visitors; it's a long story, but he has totally stolen my heart.

  3. I too am a dog lover, however my dogs have been lucky not to die before I find others. This leaves me with a lot of them at times, to the point where I can barely afford to feed them. But, I can't turn them away. I guess it's time for a second job.

  4. You are so awesome to take Oliver in. He is so CUTE! We adopted an abused neglected shepherd mix 9 yrs ago and she is the best dog. She had over protective issues but is much better now. I will send the email about Oliver to my daughter because she is in a Vet Tech program and will surely appreciate his journey. Thanx!

  5. Thank you, Jerome, I know what you mean, at one time I had 5 pets and it was a bit overwhelming along with the children and being a single mom...

  6. Dear Anonymous, Thank you, some of the greatest kindnesses I have experienced have been from people who work at veterinary hospitals; your daughter must have a very loving heart!

Shepherd mix dogs are so sweet and gentle...

I've had so many emails about Oliver and I think he knows that he's having his 15 minutes of fame, which is a lot longer in Dog Years of course!
